How to Choose the Best Mattress for You?
One of the most crucial purchases you can make for your home, is choosing a comfortable and high quality mattress, that won’t break your budget! Having a comfortable mattress, will help you get a restful night’s sleep and feel energised the next day.
However, with so many options available, choosing the right mattress may seem like a daunting task. In this guide we’ve included some helpful tips that will help you along the way.
Different Types of Mattresses:
When you first start shopping and comparing mattresses, you’ll notice that they are made of different materials inside and can be classified into different types. The three main types include:
- Memory foam mattresses are made entirely of one or more layers of foam inside and no springs or coils. Their advantage is that they can contour and adapt to your body shape better. Also, they provide very good pressure relief and isolate motion between sleep partners and couples.
- Pocket spring mattresses have a layer of pocket springs inside. Usually the number will vary between 1,000-2,000 depending on the brand and model. The higher the number of springs the more expensive the mattress and the better support it provides. Each spring moves independently, so they can adjust and support your body. They also distribute weight evenly as you lay down. Usually above the pocket springs there is a layer of polyester fibers, or natural materials, such as wool, cotton, latex and others.
- Hybrid mattresses are those that have one or more layers of memory foam and a layer of pocket springs. They will provide a good level of bounce and contouring. Depending on the number of pocket springs inside, the can provide good pressure relief and support.
Mattress Firmness:
Another important factor to consider, when shopping for a new mattress is “How firm should it be?” Generally mattresses are sold in four comfort grades or levels of firmness. They include: soft, medium, firm and extra firm. The firmness level you choose will depend on your preferences, for example if you like a soft or more firm sleep surface.
But if you’re wondering what firmness level is optimal, a study conducted by Dr. Jeffrey N. Katz at Medical Harvard can provide some insight into this question. The study included 313 individuals who experienced lower pack pain. It found that sleeping on a “medium-firm” mattress is most effective in alleviating lower back and hip pain.

Mattress Size:
There are five UK standard mattress sizes, which include: single, small double, double, king and super king.

Buying a mattress online vs. in a store
The traditional method of purchasing a mattress is to visit a retail store, lay down on a mattress for a few minutes, and then decide if it is comfortable or not. But a few minutes is not long enough to find out if the mattress will be comfortable for you to sleep on every night after you bring it home.
Laying on a new mattress in a retail store won’t tell you if it sleeps hot or not, during the summer months. Or if it will give you back pain when you wake up in the mornings.
