About Us:

buying a new mattress

We spend 1/3 of our lives sleeping, and often we overlook the importance of having a good mattress or bed that will help us sleep and rest better. Think about how much more things you get done after a good night sleep? And the opposite, how you struggle with your day after waking up from a poor night sleep.

If you find that your mattress is uncomfortable it might be time to change it for a new one. Buying a new mattress is an expensive investment, however if you divide the cost over 5-10 years time, you’ll see that it’s worth spending more since you’ll be using it for many years.

Let’s look at two examples at what happens if you spend £500 or £1000 on a new mattress. Let’s say you’re planning on using it for 8 years (or 2,920 nights).

  • If you spend £500 for a new mattress, then that’s £62.5 per year, £5.20 per month or £0.17 per night.
  • On the other hand if your budget is £1000 then you’ll spend £125 per year, £10.40 per month or £0.34 per night.

As you can see, a new mattress is a big investment in the beginning, however due to the fact that you’ll be using it for over 5 years the cost will spread over time. We’re not saying the the more expensive the mattress is the better it is, but generally the higher the price the more features, springs, layers there are inside.

How Much Does a New Mattress Cost?

If you search on Amazon you’ll be able to find new mattresses as low as £60 for a double size. On the other hand if you look at the prices of a Tempur mattress (which is one of the most premium brands in the world), their prices can range around £1300-£1800 for a double size.

Our recommendation is not to go for the lowest prices, but find something in the middle ground. You can still find a good mattress for $400-800 for a double size. The top two secrets to doing this is to read customer reviews of people who already bought the mattress, and the second secret is to buy it on sale during a major holiday or seasonal sale. This way you can save 25%-30% off the original price.

When shopping for a new mattress, check what materials it’s made from inside. For example, memory foam, springs, eco-friendly materials, etc. and how thick each layer is. How thick the mattress is? Some are around 20-25cm, while there are others that are around 30-35cm. However, a 25cm thick mattress is considered a good thickness and will provide enough support. Check if it’s single or double sided and if you’ll need to rotate it regularly, also check how long it’s guarantee or warranty is.

How Much Does a New Bed Cost?

The prices of new beds start around £149 for a double size and go up to £500 if you’re looking for a divan base or an ottoman bed (which has storage options inside). If you have a higher budget you can also get a TV bed or an adjustable bed. When you’re shopping for a new bed, check what materials it’s made of: metal, wood, MDF, etc. If you want an upholstered bed, you can choose between different upholstery fabrics: polyester, linen, velvet, faux leather, etc.
